  1. What is Virtual Web Hosting?

We specialize in Virtual Web Hosting meaning that we offer a web presence for fully qualified domain names (www.yourname.com) on state-of-the-art Internet servers. We help to register your domain name which acts as your unique address on the World Wide Web. There are many advantages to having your own domain name. For instance, a domain name is like a service brand maximizing your visibility throughout the Internet. Also, e-mail is addressed to your business (whomever@yourbusiness.com) rather than to some third party company acting on your behalf, like a non-virtual web host. Non-Virtual web hosting is when your name is an extension on another ISP's domain name (like www.someisp.com/yourbusiness). Virtual Web Hosting is an inexpensive alternative for an individual or business to serve their web site to the Internet. To serve your own web site directly to the Internet can cost several thousands of dollars. You would need things like servers and a high speed phone line installation (normally a T1 or T3 line) from the local phone company. Servers can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more depending on capability and, when serving to the Internet, you would probably need at least two - one for web site serving and an additional server for handling electronic mail. High speed phone lines can cost from $3,000 to $8,000 and of course there is installation. Finally, an experienced server administrator can cost an annual salary of $40,000 to $80,000 a year. All of this huge cost can be easily avoided withWebTent's Web Hosting service at the everyday low price of just $29.95 per month. You'll also receive access to our Members Area where you'll find an extensive library of useful information on how to have a dynamic Internet presence.

  2. Does WebTent handle domain registration?

4domains is a WebTent registrar partnerYes. We hope that you will allow WebTent to register the domain name you wish us to host with our ICANN accredited registrar. Our pricing for domain name registration can be found here. If you have already registered your domain name, you can have it transferred* to our registrar for $25, which adds one year, or do one of the following:

    • Have your current registrar update their DNS records for your domain name to point at the following domain name servers:
      • Primary: ns1.webtent.net
      • Secondary: ns2.webtent.net
    • If you already have your own DNS servers, change the necessary records in the zone file for your domain name to point the appropriate IP numbers assigned to your account by WebTent, found in your welcome message.

  3. Can I transfer an existing domain name to WebTent?

Yes. Although it is much simplier to have us register your domain name if you plan to host on the WebTent network, a number of our customers have transferred domains to our service. Within our order form you can indicate that you are requesting a transfer and not registering for a new domain. Transferring your domain will add one year to the expiration of the domain name registration.

  4. What is propagation?

Once your domain name has been registered (or transferred, if applicable), it usually takes about 24-hours before it is active (although it can take up to 72 hours on occasion). All internet service providers ISP's (such as AOL, MSN, etc.) must update their records (DNS tables) to reflect new site locations. This is called propagation. You can check with your ISP to see how often they update their records.

  5. What is the fee for domain registration?

Charges to non-hosting customers are $35 per year to register a new domain name. Registration pricing for hosting customers is available here.

  6. Is my amount of data transfer going to be enough to support my web site?

Our experience has shown that the amount of data transfer allocated for each of WebTent package offered will be more than enough bandwidth for the average web site. Depending on the quantity and sizes of your files, this could support many thousands of hits per month. Note that only 1-2% of our business/commerce customers have exceeded 500 MB of data transfer per month. If you feel your web site will exceed the allowed monthly traffic, just let us know and we'll try to make special arrangements. The allowances are merely to avoid users from serving other web hosting clients from their WebTent space.

  7. How do I transfer files to my web site?

Files must be transferred to the web server via File Transport Protocol (FTP).
